As from the thread title you can probably tell I am new to the world of internet. I have read a lot of posts mentioning the word ping. I would like to know what ping means and how this affects the speed and service of a broadband connection.

Is ping something which we need to look into when getting a new connection?

Ping is the time it takes for certain amount of data to reach a server and then back to the originating machine or in other words the time it takes for data to make a round trip to the server. Speed or bandwidth on the other hand is measurement of data that can be transferred from a server to a computer. Ping is measures in ms (mili seconds) and speed or bandwidth is for instance 2Mb/sec and so on.
